North Korea & Burma: Axis of Weasels

Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed concern regarding the possible transfer of nuclear technology from North Korea to Myanmar.  The prospect of military

cooperation between these two militaristic authoritarian regimes is neither surprising nor difficult to understand. 

 

The Obama

administration and its allies are charged with the difficult task of minimizing cooperation between these regimes, preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the region, and ending North Korea’s blackmail-based foreign policy .  These three interconnected goals are necessary preconditions for producing long-term security in the region.    

 

It should come as no surprise that the governments of North Korea and Myanmar may be forming an alliance.  The two governments are remarkably similar and their shared strategic interests and ideological beliefs make them ideal allies.
