What began as a fissure -- a reasonable fear by developing countries that they might be required to curb their development to solve a problem created by rich countries as they made themselves rich -- became by Copenhagen the unbridgeable chasm that swallowed the best efforts of more than 100 world leaders and the hopes of millions of people.
