Two-Faced Tories Can't Have Both Ways

I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, sweat and tax cuts. Anyone wondering why the Tories have failed to establish a commanding lead over a government that is obviously on its last legs need only reflect on this famous speech never given by Winston Churchill.

History does not relate whether Churchill was advised, as David Cameron clearly has been, to offer voters some modest palliatives for the hardships they were about to suffer, but if the thought did occur to him, he dismissed it in a nanosecond. You don’t have to be a political genius to understand why. The fundamental cause of the Tory malaise, from which all other symptoms follow, is that they are sending two opposing messages at the same time.
