It was worth the wait. After nearly four decades, and a 12-year judicial inquiry costing nearly £200m, Lord Saville’s inquest has established the truth about Bloody Sunday. In that shaming incident, British paratroopers shot dead 13 unarmed civil rights protesters in Londonderry (another died later). The British state thereby pitched the Northern Ireland conflict into a lethal spiral where paramilitaries would call the shots – literally.
