The integration of newcomers in North America on the other hand has followed roughly the same pattern for hundreds of years. The first generation maintains old customs, language and costume and usually lives in ethnic enclaves that become commercial ethnic enclaves. Their children grow up, speak fluent English, move from the enclave and often marry outside of their community. As an added insult, the parents’ old world practices are often rewarded with protracted eye rolling from their thoroughly Canadianized children.
