Pakistan has been under relentless pressure from the United States for more than a year to root out al-Qaeda and related militants in the volatile North Waziristan tribal area. Politicians in Islamabad have washed their hands of the matter, leaving it up to army chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kiani. He has decided in principle to go ahead, even though the consequences will inevitably be catastrophic.
