The United Nations Gets Tough

The United Nations is to be applauded for the robust action it has initiated in Ivory Coast to protect civilians caught up in the fierce fighting. All too often in Africa (and elsewhere), the failure of international peacekeepers to intervene has resulted in grotesque abuses of human rights, as well as some of the worst massacres of the modern age. In the 1990s, the UN’s inability to provide its peacekeepers with an effective mandate during the Rwanda crisis resulted in the deaths of more than 800,000 people; later, in Darfur, at least another 200,000 perished due to the UN’s inaction.
