In the immediate wake of the 22/7 Oslo terrorist attack, when the origin of the attack was still unknown, the international press coverage gave the impression of an unprecedented attack. Norway, a sleepy, rural, and peaceful country who seemingly faced no threats, had suddenly fallen victim to the dangers of the modern world. But this image of Norway and the Nordic countries as being somehow ensconced from both new and traditional security challenges is inaccurate.
