On Monday evening friends emailed me photos from the most recentanti-government demonstration in Budapest. It had been a memorable day in more than one way: on this 2nd of January 2012, the new, "unconstitutional" constitution of Hungary – now deprived of its title of "republic" – came into force, having been whisked through parliament at breakneck speed and with breathtaking disregard for the democratic principles on which the member states of the European Union are supposed to be founded.
