It would be impossible to imagine Otto von Bismarck taking sides in an election campaign in the French Third Republic. But now, under the Fifth Republic, Bismarck’s present successor as German chancellor, Angela Merkel, has undertaken to make joint campaign appearances with Nicolas Sarkozy in the presidential election in April. This cross-border endorsement may portend a new era of transnational politics in Europe.
