Are Brits Happy? Is Anyone?

Can we read anything into happiness surveys? Asking people how happy they are and trying to make sense of the results teeters on the very edge of scientific and statistical plausibility but that hasn’t stopped the Office of National Statistics having a go.

Apparently we Brits score a creditable 7.6 out of 10 in our sense of well-being, with Northern Irish married couples in stable employment coming top and Bangladeshi and black Londoners somewhere near the bottom. Women are generally happier than men, the old more than the young, the employed more than the jobless and the married more than the single. Having children helps too.
