Next week David Cameron, George Osborne and William Hague arrive in Washington for an official visit. It is the initiative of the Obama administration, and there is no doubt the President is looking forward to it.
His enthusiasm and his imminent need to be re-elected are not coincidental. Despite some diplomatic gaffes in the three years since Barack Obama went into the White House, Britain remains America’s most reliable ally.
The American people know this, and the President knows they know it. A successful visit from that ally’s political leaders would say much about his statesmanship.
