By turning in such a failed performance, Annan and the United Nations should simply acknowledge that their attempt to alleviate a human tragedy has become politicized, and backfired with tragic results. Instead of reducing the violence, the body counts have reached alarming levels, and generated huge despair among the Syrian people, some of whom truly believed that the presence of international monitors might actually help them, instead of hurt them.
