Post-World War II, the monarchy seemed to realise a cult of celebrity was fascinating the world - but was democratically available to millions buying tickets to see Hollywood icons' films or reading about their lives in publications. The monarchy thus began changing its appeal, from being a distant, imperious body to a lighter, brighter, more accessible dynasty whose palaces could be toured via holiday packages, exploits reported freely and lives documented glossily on cinema and TV.
