U.S. Pivot Towards Asia Is Untenable

With US defence secretary Leon Panetta's high-profile visit to Asia, the slowly building tensions between the US and China reached a new level this week. Panetta's announcement that 60% of US naval assets would be deployed in Asia by 2020, his visit to Vietnam's fabled Cam Ranh Bay and his meetings with India's defence leadership were intended to signal to China the seriousness of America's commitment to the region.
