The harsh truth must be said. The demonstrations that started as anti-tuition marches, then became anti-Bill 78 events and now anti-neo-liberalism ones, have inadvertently also become something else – in effect, anti-Montreal events.
The carré rouge protesters, and even the Black Bloc brick throwers, would say that that’s ridiculous – that they love this city. I wouldn’t challenge that for an instant. It’s hard for anyone who knows Montreal not to love it.
But it’s the demonstrations that are anti-Montreal (as distinct from demonstrators). And these protests are anti-Montreal in effect (rather than in intent).
Montreal is collateral damage.
