The fate of all political leaders is to disappoint. To paraphrase Malvolio’s letter in Twelfth Night, some achieve disappointment, and some have disappointment thrust upon them. Others are simply born disappointing. Ed Miliband was one of those. Written off almost from the moment of his election, he was allowed no period of grace.
