The 20th Olympiad at Munich was well under way just under 40 years ago when eight armed invaders from Black September, a Palestinian group linked to Yasser Arafat’s Al Fatah, entered the Israeli compound. It was a Tuesday, shortly before dawn, Sept. 5, 1972. Their mission almost failed at the start. Some athletes sneaking back to their own quarters after a night on the town spotted the men with duffel bags trying to scale a six-foot wire fence on Kuzoczinskidamm about 4 a.m., about 50 yards from the sleeping quarters of Israel’s athletes in Munich’s Olympic village.
