In August 2008, thousands of Russian troops and armour rolled into Georgia, while the Russian air force pounded Georgia's military, its infrastructure and civilian targets. It was a war that brought destruction and despair to many. When international reporters return years later to areas of such devastation, they usually encounter a grim reality, where human suffering prevails, with no hope in sight. This was one possible scenario for my country as well after the invasion by a neighbour vastly larger and vastly superior in military capabilities. A still worse scenario was the threat of obliteration of our statehood and of our way of life.
