There is, while we’re on the subject, such a thing as British patriotism. You’d be surprised by how many people around the world treat FIFA, rather than the United Nations, as the main arbiter of what constitutes an independent state. In many non-Anglosphere countries, people talk of ‘England’ rather than ‘Britain’ (see Santayana below, for example) and vaguely think of Scotland as some sort of repressed colony. There is now a clearer idea of what the United Kingdom is.
