For Dictators, Laughter Isn't Best Medicine

“If the American government . . . had been able to get Afghanistan to laugh at the Taliban, they probably would have saved a lot of money and a lot of lives,” Swedish ad exec Tomas Mazetti told Foreign Policy Magazine last week.

His agency, Studio Total of Sweden, adds on its website: “A dictator can be hated, despised or feared. The only thing he cannot survive is being laughed at.”

They’re nice thoughts but history says it ain’t necessarily so.
