In the first round of France's 2012 presidential election, the far-right Front National, led by Marine Le Pen, received just under 18 percent of the votes, and the far left Front de Gauche of Jean-Luc Mélenchon took a little over 11 percent. Together, the extremes garnered about 10 million votes. This mirrors recent elections or opinion polls across many European Union countries.
