For decades, the European political class and its slavish media allies have sought to portray themselves as the forces of progress, culture, and free thinking. Eurosceptics like Mr Hannan by contrast, have been painted as ‘swivel-eyed lunatics’ – extreme nationalists viscerally opposed to any political cooperation with their neighbours. But with the euro seemingly in its death throes, and anti-EU parties making huge strides across the continent, the tables have been well and truly turned.
