Right now, American strategy in the Pacific is based around constructing a network of alliances that could help deter potential aggression from a rising China. But the risks of such a strategy is that you could end up being forced to honour a treaty commitment in a way that you had never intended or envisaged. The current Chinese-Japanese dispute over the islands is a reminder of that danger.
