Zenawi Death Leaves Vacuum in Africa

Meles Zinawe, who died early on Tuesday after more than two decades ruling Ethiopia in the strife-torn Horn of Africa, was not an especially nice man. He had little tolerance for opposition at home and never shrank from going to war abroad if he felt justified. But he also had a fiercely held vision of how Ethiopia could and should develop. And despite his frequent abuses of human rights, unlike many African leaders he championed the advancement of women and the fundamental necessity in any development policy of a solid education system.
