Anders Breivik will spend the rest of his life in jail. The sentence of 21 years handed down today is not a maximum, but an effective minimum. It can then be extended by 5 year increments for the rest of his natural life. A fact sheet distributed today by the Norwegian authorities is unambiguous: “Preventive Detention is an indefinite sentence that may be given to dangerous, accountable offenders with the purpose of protecting the community against new serious criminality.”
But I wouldn’t take any joy from that fact. Because Breivik’s victory is now complete.
