Tory Leadership Contest Begins

Boris Johnson was in sparkling form last night at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in Covent Garden. Accepting the gong for Politician of the Year, the Mayor used the old classical rhetorician’s trick of captatio benevolentiae — capturing the goodwill of an audience that included Kylie, Tinie Tempah, Grace Jones and half the cast of Mad Men — by insisting that the credit was due not to him, but to those who had truly made London 2012 possible: the police, the Army, the volunteers and, above all, the athletes. Naturally, this artful self-deprecation had them eating out of the mayoral hand all the more. As he left the stage, co-host David Walliams remarked that Boris was played “as always, by Matt Lucas”. Business as usual, in other words.
