Many Liberal Democrats and some Conservatives believe Nick Clegg is basically a Tory in disguise who dislikes his party as much as most members of his party dislike him. It isn’t true. The Lib Dem leader may be at odds with his party grassroots, but he is to his core a liberal of a certain sort common in the educated metropolitan classes. He is an arrogant and intolerant man who hates many aspects of his own country.
