Time for World to Stand Up to Iran's Demagoguery

It is not enough that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will once again receive the honor to stand before the United Nations General Assembly and spew his hatred of Israel and denial of the Holocaust. This year, he will be doing it on Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

 

Technically, Ahmadinejad has the legal right to address the UN’s GA. It is enshrined in the contract the US signed with the UN in 1945 as part of the agreement to establish the international body in Turtle Bay, Manhattan.

 

The US is powerless to arrest the Iranian leader who has diplomatic immunity as long as his visits are connected to the UN. However, prominent figures such as Irwin Cotler, the former minister of justice and attorney-general of Canada, Hillel Neuer of UN Watch as well as Eli Wiesel, the well-respected Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor, have all called on the UN to indict Ahmadinejad and expel the Iranian regime from membership of the international body.

 

According to Article 6 of the UN Charter, “a member of the UN which has persistently violated the principles contained in the present Charter may be expelled from the Organization by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.”
