Spain vs. the Foreign Press

Last week, through the paper-thin walls of my apartment, I overheard my neighbor, a septuagenarian retiree, shouting on the telephone while she was cooking dinner.

“They say that we’re all going hungry in Spain,” she gawked incredulously amid the sizzles in the kitchen. “Things are bad, but, really, can you believe that?”

She was complaining about foreign journalists. Another spate of articles had come out in the international press about the Spanish economy, including one with photos in The New York Times  that caused a stir.

 

Spaniards like my neighbor are feeling overexposed to foreign scrutiny these days.
