The US intelligence community acknowledges that within two decades the country will no longer be the world's sole hegemon. Beijing's response that a rising China "will unswervingly pursue a way of peaceful development" is well and good, but for conflict to be eluded it must avoid stoking US fears, while Washington must be willing to accommodate China as an equal.
