Islamists on the Rise in Syria

The civil war in Syria shows no signs of abating after 22 months and in fact seems likely to continue with equal intensity between the rebel groups after the anticipated fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s dictatorial regime. With the democratic future of the country at risk, a closer look is needed at one of the most feared rebel forces fighting in the Syrian conflict, Jabhat al-Nusra. Al-Nusra’s connection to the al-Qaeda franchise marks them out as a serious, long-term threat to the stability of the country, and even the whole region. This report, ‘Jabhat al-Nusra: A Strategic Briefing’, aims to elucidate and analyse the group’s background, strategy and organisation, as well as mapping out the challenges which face them in the future.
