Syria Proof That Ruthlessness Pays

Could the world have avoided Syria’s carnage? Diplomatically that was never going to happen, as long as Russia continued to prop up the regime. The alternative – armed intervention – would seem no more credible, especially with the examples of Iraq and Afghanistan so recently at hand. Those two wars argue that intervention is pointless unless there is a real chance of ousting the existing government and replacing it with a better one with enough domestic support to survive.
