With characteristic obstinacy, David Cameron refused over the past few years to react to the defection of thousands of natural Tories to Ukip. He wouldn’t change his wrong-headed, irrelevant and in some cases poisonous policies that drove them away. So what happened in Thursday’s elections was not so much a defeat as a self-inflicted wound.
