The British Establishment Jolted By People Power

The one consolation for David Cameron from Thursday’s elections in England is that the outcome could have been worse. Indeed, in the past it has been: far worse. In the same set of shire contests in 1993, the Tories were reduced to control of a single county, Buckinghamshire. Last night, they were either still running or were the dominant party in two dozen authorities and remain by far the biggest force in local government.
