Mr. Farage describes himself as a libertarian. Asked what that means to him, he responds: "On a personal level, I can't stand government telling me what I should and shouldn't do. I'm naturally very rebellious against government saying it." At the same time, he touts the support that he says UKIP is draining from the Labour Party, which he describes as the "big loser" in this month's local elections. Asked how he squares his own free-market inclinations with his desire to draw votes from across the spectrum, he returns, as ever, to UKIP's "big-ticket issue"—Europe. As long as UKIP remains essentially a protest party, that answer may be good enough.
