An Angry Global Middle Class

The victory of the Egyptian protesters in ousting President Mohamed Morsi will not empty the streets. The army's intervention may have delivered the protesters' demand but the polarised country promises to be in turmoil for a long time to come. It is, however, not just Egypt. The phenomenon of mass protests — from Spain, Greece and Turkey to Brazil — shaking democratically elected governments, is becoming the new normal. Despite differences in their situation, protests by the emerging middle class are being driven by the same forces of globalisation.
