Although the events of July 3 and the previous two years in Egypt continue to send shock waves throughout the Middle East, a quick glance at a more distant past provides a bit of perspective. There is a vast continuum of forces at work in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East, anchored by political geology on one end of the continuum and today's local political weather on the other.
