Ed Miliband Bets Entire Future on One Speech

Ed Miliband returns to work this week. He comes back from France to find that his party has failed to land a blow on the Coalition in his absence. It’s been David Cameron and Nick Clegg who have been setting the summer pace – not Labour. But those hoping that Miliband will make a grand entrance are going to be disappointed. Instead, I’m told, it’ll be a ‘workmanlike return’. There’ll be no dramatic new policies, no charge to the television studios. Rather, Miliband will simply chip in with Labour’s effort to drive forward the cost of living as a political issue. Why this inactivity at a time when Oppositions normally make hay? Well, I’m told, Miliband is currently ‘obsessed’ with his conference speech.
