Mr Cameron is at the top of the most slippery of slopes, yet our political objective remains perilously unclear. If it’s to remove Assad, what does the Prime Minister imagine will take his place? Foreign Secretary William Hague speaks of Syria’s ‘moderate rebels’, but will they prevail if the regime falls? There are certainly powerful and sinister groups of West-hating Islamist extremists who plan to ensure they don’t.
