Afghanistan is part of a disturbing mosaic that also includes Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Algeria, Mali, Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria, the West Bank and Gaza. Bloodshed is the common denominator. So, too, is the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. Canberra has finally woken up to the magnitude of the task of trying to bring enlightenment to a culture still in the thrall of tribalism. The West has been guilty of naivety.
