New Year in Antarctica

The diesel-powered Shokalskiy comes with depth sounders, automatic radar plotting, various satellite positioning systems and a full array of communication links. Instead of sledges and huskies, today's expeditioners are equipped with amphibious all-terrain vehicles to explore their surroundings. As for entertainment, the Shokalskiy has a stocked bar and an auditorium loaded with movies. It also has enough fresh and dehydrated food to last its passengers another month, though one did warn to AFP this week that their booze was running low and would just suffice for a respectable New Year's Eve celebration.
