Taiwan's Make-Believe Status Quo
Douglas Goold, National Post
The Associated Press
What a difference a change in parties and the passage of half a decade can make in one of the world’s flashpoints, as I learned during a recent visit to Taiwan. After visiting the island of 23 million people for a week in 2006, I published an article in the National Post which warned that the government (then the Democratic Progressive Party), was “courting a dangerous pro-independence strategy, despite Chinese warnings that any concrete moves towards independence will prompt military action.” My, how things have changed.
