David Cameron will survive last night’s rebellion by 85 Conservative backbenchers over the Government’s immigration Bill. The vote does, however, further dent his battered authority. It also highlights again how deeply his party is divided on Europe — not a happy reminder today, as the Prime Minister welcomes French President François Hollande for an Anglo-French summit at which EU reform will be the most central issue.
