Some 35,000 African elephants were murdered in 2012 alone, culling what had been a population of 1.2 million in 1980 to hardly 400,000 now. Poachers, many associated with terror groups, have cut down the beasts in record numbers to harvest “the white gold of jihad” since a treaty banning the international ivory trade was watered down in 2008, and demand in the Far East exploded.
