An Endangered Liberal Voice in Japan

The LDP once had a liberal tradition built up by leaders like Shigeru Yoshida (prime minister 1946-47 and 1948-54), Hayato Ikeda (1960-64), Masayoshi Ohira (1978-80) and Kiichi Miyazawa (1991-93) as well as former LDP Secretary General Koichi Kato. Where has the glorious history of the party’s liberalism gone and in which direction is the Abe administration leading the nation? It may well be worth listening to the warning bells sounded by Murakami, who has become a member of a “politically endangered species.”
