Compared to Malaysia’s maladroit handling of the mystery surrounding flight MH370, the way many countries have rushed to help, particularly in the search in the remote southern Indian Ocean under Australia’s direction, could hardly be more heartening as an example of international co-operation. Even Japan, which has been fiercely at loggerheads with China in the dispute over the Senkaku-Diaoyu islands, has put differences aside and deployed PC Orion surveillance aircraft to Perth to work in conjunction with aircraft and ships sent by China and other nations.
