The United States and its European allies can do many things on behalf of Ukraine in its dispute with Russia. They can impose economic sanctions, provide economic and military assistance, increase defense outlays and warn Russian President Vladimir Putin of the dangers of additional aggression. What they can't change is the fact that Ukraine shares a long and vulnerable border with Russia. That is, the U.S. and its allies can't move Ukraine — or, for that matter, Russia.
