US Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to Ukraine today marks the latest ratcheting up of the crisis that has gripped the country since the overthrow of its government in February and Russia’s annexation of Crimea last month. Mr Biden is in Kiev to meet Ukraine’s acting President, Oleksandr Turchynov, to pledge US support — though he has been low on specifics. That may render the gesture as impotent as previous moves: while the US has imposed sanctions — and more aggressively than the EU — they have had no apparent impact as yet.
