The presence of Vladimir Putin yesterday in the Crimean city of Sevastopol, ostensibly to mark Russia’s annual VE Day celebrations, was deliberately provocative. Until recently, Crimea was part of Ukraine – before it was annexed after last month’s illegal referendum in favour of a federation with Moscow. Tomorrow, a similarly illegitimate referendum is to be held in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk, which might pave the way to its breaking away and becoming part of Russia.
